Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
