Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
